Over het museum
The Kateřinská jeskyně (Kateřina Cave) is first mentioned in 1858, when Jan Nepomuk Soukop described it vividly. From the second half of the 19th century it was systematically explored by Jindřich Wankel, who found a Neolithic hearth there. Karel Absolon discovered a new part of the cave on 10 October 1909, and in 1910 the cave was opened to the public and electrically lit.
Absolon later explored the lower level of the Kalcitová chodba (Calcite Passage). In 1936 he found a mass find of bear skeletons in the Medvědí komín (Bear Chimney). In 1940 he discovered the upper levels about 40 metres above the tour route; his way further was blocked by the end section called Dantovo peklo (Dante’s Inferno). In the early 1990s speleologists discovered the related Ventarola cave.
People used the cave in several periods: the oldest tools come from the Magdalenian, and further finds date from the Late Bronze Age and the Hallstatt period. The main chamber (Hlavní dóm) measures 96 × 44 × 20 metres and, according to the operator, is the largest accessible underground space in the Czech Republic. According to legend, the name comes from a girl, Kateřina, who got lost in the cave.
