Over het museum
The Klementinum is the vast complex of the former Jesuit college. The Jesuits settled in Prague in 1556 in a former Dominican monastery and in the following centuries gradually extended the complex. Remodelling in the early Baroque followed designs by Carlo Lurago, and the complex was completed in the high Baroque period between 1709 and 1726. After the Jesuit order was dissolved in 1773, the university took the complex over.
The Astronomical Tower was built in 1722 and a mathematical museum was founded. On the initiative of Joseph Stepling, the observatory in the tower operated from the 1750s until 1938. From 1775 onwards observations were recorded systematically, the longest continuous series in Central Europe. The Baroque library hall is decorated with frescoes by Jan Hiebel.
After extensive reconstruction between 1924 and 1936 the complex served the library, which has been called the National Library of the Czech Republic since 1990. The guided tour run by Prague City Tourism leads through the Baroque library, the Meridian Hall with historical astronomical instruments and the Astronomical Tower with a gallery at a height of 52 metres.
