Over het museum
Polná Castle was probably built in the second half of the 12th or the first half of the 13th century and is among the oldest noble castles in the Czech lands; the first surviving record of the castle dates from 1356. It was owned, among others, by the lords of Lipé, the Ptáček family of Pirkštejn and the Kunštát family. After a fire in 1584–1586 it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Zachariáš z Hradce, and from 1623 it belonged to the Ditrichštejn family. After a great fire in 1794 part of the buildings was lost, and in the 19th century the complex fell into decay.
The museum in Polná was founded in connection with the Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895. The collections were made accessible from 1 January 1900 in the former school building known as the Kaplanka. In 1922 the manufacturer Václav Pojman bought the castle and chateau and gave them to the Polná associations; the museum association acquired the castle, and the collections moved here in 1925. From 1953 the owner has been the town of Polná; in 1963 the museum became a branch of the Jihlava museum, and since 1 January 2007 it has been an independent contributory organization of the town. A major reconstruction of the castle was completed in 2004.
Today the museum offers four tour routes: Castle I, with the lapidarium, a Baroque pharmacy and an exhibition of crafts; Castle II, with the historic halls; the Museum route, with an exhibition of clocks and clockmaking; and a separate exhibition, the Old School on Poděbradova Street. The castle courtyard and the parkán (outer terrace) with aviaries of birds of prey are freely accessible.
