Over het museum
The museum in Varnsdorf was founded as early as 1902 and was housed in one room on the ground floor of today's primary school on Edvarda Beneše Square. In 1913 the small collection moved to the cellar of the Vyšší reálná škola (Higher Real School), and in 1926 the museum became independent; its first head was the town librarian Arthur Herr. In 1939 it acquired the Empire-style villa no. 415 in Poštovní Street, built in 1834.
In 1976 the municipal museum became a branch of the district museum, today the Oblastní muzeum v Děčíně (Regional Museum in Děčín). Because of the building's dangerous condition, the museum was moved in 2009–2010 to temporary premises in the former crèche building at Legií 2574. A large part of the collections dates from before 1945; the most valuable items include rare Coptic textiles and the estate of the painter Hanka Krawcec. The history of textile production is also represented.
Today the museum is closed to the public because of the dangerous condition of the building, and its seat is temporarily in the former premises of the children's and music department of the Městská knihovna Varnsdorf (Varnsdorf Town Library). Nevertheless, the museum holds exhibitions, lectures and competitions for schools, and it works with the Kruh přátel muzea Varnsdorf (Circle of Friends of the Varnsdorf Museum).
