Over het museum

The Boží Dar local history museum is housed in a former fire station in the centre of the town. It lies at an altitude of 1,030 metres above sea level and is the highest-situated museum in the Czech Republic. The exhibition opened in 2000 and presents the history of the town, which is considered the highest-situated town in Central Europe.

On display are, for example, a bell from 1594, the oldest movable monument of the town, and a parlour with furnishings and objects of everyday life from past centuries. Visitors will also see Ore Mountains minerals, models of the lookout towers on Klínovec and Fichtelberg, tools used for mining ore and peat, and Christmas nativity scenes. A separate section recalls the stay of the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis in Boží Dar.

The building also houses the town hall, an information centre and the Ježíškova pošta (Ježíšek’s post office), which has been stamping Christmas cards since 1994.
