Over het museum
The museum is housed in the complex of a former Minorite and later Franciscan monastery, founded soon after the establishment of the town of Plzeň at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries; it is one of the oldest medieval monuments in the town. The monastery was damaged during the Hussite Wars and other sieges; in the 18th century it received a Baroque façade, and in 1950 monastic life there was forcibly ended. The building then served, among other things, the West Bohemian Museum and other needs of the Plzeň bishopric.
The museum continues the work of the Diocesan Museum, which had operated in the monastery since 1997. During the extensive reconstruction of the monastery in 2009–2011 the exhibition spaces were enlarged, and the permanent exhibition was created in 2011 and 2012 in cooperation with the West Bohemian Museum in Plzeň, the Plzeň Bishopric and the Atelier Soukup.
The tour route leads through the monastery refectory, the cloister, the chapter house with the chapel of St Barbara and the Paradise Courtyard. The objects on display come from various historical periods; they include paintings, sculptures, liturgical vessels and vestments, supplemented by texts explaining the significance of the objects in the lives of Christians. The museum also prepares short- and medium-term exhibitions, lectures and guided tours, and the spaces are used for wedding ceremonies as well.
