Over het museum
Efforts to found a municipal museum in Kroměříž go back to the 1860s. A decisive step came at the end of the 1920s, when the town bought mainly the archaeological collection of the printer Jindřich Slovák. The board of trustees of the Municipal Museum was established on 5 February 1933, and the museum opened to the public on 4 March 1934 on Riegrovo náměstí. In 1950 it moved to Kroměříž Chateau, and after several changes of name and administration, the unified Museum of the Kroměříž Region with its branches was created in 1977, including the windmills in Velké Těšany and Rymice.
Today’s main building on Velké náměstí 38 was planned as the permanent seat from 1968. The front wing has served the Max Švabinský Memorial since 1976; the museum acquired the rear wing in the same year, and since 1988 the building has served as a cultural and administrative centre. It is a house from 1609 in Renaissance-Mannerist style with original stone vaults.
Since 2003 the museum has been a contributory organisation of the Zlín Region. It cares for archaeological, natural science and ethnographic collections and for works by Max Švabinský, a native of Kroměříž. The museum has a specialist library with a reading room, an education department, and the windmill in Velké Těšany and the Rymice Open-Air Museum.
