Over het museum
The poet Otokar Březina worked as a teacher in Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou from 1901. At first he rented a room next to the school, and from 1913 until his death in 1929 he occupied the first floor of the house of the baker Vlček. The museum is housed there today. At the poet's funeral, his friends, among them the sculptor František Bílek and the poet Jakub Deml, agreed that a memorial should be created on the site where Březina had lived and died.
Bílek unveiled a memorial plaque on the house as early as 1930. The museum, which was then the first literary museum in Moravia, was managed from 1932 by the Otokar Březina Society. After the society was dissolved in the 1950s, the building fell into disrepair and its memorabilia ended up in the Třebíč museum. After 1989 the house was reconstructed, and the museum reopened on 11 September 1993, on the 125th anniversary of the poet's birth. Since 1990 the revived Otokar Březina Society has again looked after it. Since 2005 the building has been designated a cultural monument.
On the first floor the poet's flat survives in its original form, with furniture, paintings, prints and smaller sculptures that František Bílek gave to Březina during his lifetime. Display cases with rare documents are also shown. On the ground floor are the study library and an exhibition on the history of the museum and the Society; in the corridor are display cases for thematic exhibitions.
