Over het museum
The Hotel Jalta was built on Václavské náměstí in the 1950s on the site of a house destroyed in an air raid in spring 1945. The building, in the style of so-called Stalinist Baroque, was linked to a secret anti-nuclear shelter. For decades the shelter remained completely secret from the public and from the hotel staff; after 1989 it was taken over by the civil defence of the capital city of Prague, which operated there until 1997.
Afterwards the shelter was opened at least to hotel employees, and later the association Československé ozbrojené složky, founded in 2013, set up a museum there with the consent of the hotel. The association is interested in the history of the armed forces in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War until 1993 and wants to present it interactively.
In the cleared rooms of the shelter, themed exhibitions gradually came into being on the history of the ČSSR, the armed forces and the Hotel Jalta. Visitors see a telephone exchange, an infirmary, a Veřejná bezpečnost (Public Security) office with a T100 teleprinter and SNB uniforms, an eavesdropping room, and an exhibition on the Iron Curtain and the border guard, where visitors can try Morse code. Part of the shelter, including the operations wing and the technical facilities, remains closed to the public.
