Over het museum

Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) was born in Nelahozeves, a small village on the left bank of the Vltava about 35 km north of Prague. He grew up there in the family of a local butcher and innkeeper. The Baroque birthplace, together with the adjoining farm buildings, is a major landmark of the village and a cultural monument.

In 2019 the property was taken over by Lobkowicz Collections, o.p.s., which was to transform it into an international music centre with a new museum exhibition. The interactive museum guides visitors through eleven rooms and shows the setting of a Central Bohemian village in the mid-19th century, where Dvořák grew up. It places great emphasis on sound and music. Visitors walk through the exhibition on their own with an audio guide that follows the composer’s path from modest circumstances to worldwide recognition.

The site also includes a modern visitor centre with a café and a souvenir shop. The house and its surroundings are also used for concerts, community and educational programmes and creative workshops. The museum has received several international design awards for the design of its permanent exhibition and interior.

The building is step-free and has a lift. Toilets, including accessible ones, are on the ground floor. Dogs are not allowed in the museum, with the exception of assistance dogs for visitors with visual or other impairments.

The tour is adapted for children, and the museum has playful and interactive elements. There is a children’s playground in the grounds of Nelahozeves Château. Educational programmes and an art workshop are available for schools and families.

Bereikbaarheid & parkeren

Nelahozeves is 35 km from Prague. The Vltava and Elbe cycle paths and EuroVelo 7 lead here; bicycles can be left in the grounds of the château.
