Over het museum
The Memorial to Josef Lada and his daughter Alena is housed in house no. 115, which the Lada family used for summer stays. The house was designed in 1933 by the architect Čeněk Vořech, a pupil of Jan Kotěra. Only the tiled stove in the exhibition devoted to the work of Lada’s daughter Alena has survived from the original interior. The house is surrounded by a large garden with Lada’s original mushroom-hunting forest, sculptures from 2010 and an arboretum of old fruit varieties, which has been developed since 2009.
The exhibition opened on 18 June 1986 in the presence of Alena Ladová and, with some changes over time, is still in use today. Accompanied by a guide, visitors follow in the footsteps of Josef Lada: they learn about the key dates of his life, see family photographs, a model of the Hrusice church and of his birthplace, and learn about his customs and traditions.
On the first floor there are four rooms. The first is devoted to Jaroslav Hašek and his novel The Good Soldier Švejk; the next is Lada’s studio, with the Triptych with a Czech Landscape and the cycle Children’s Games; the third shows Lada’s illustrations for fairy-tale books and his paintings of water goblins; and the last presents the free work and illustrations of Alena Ladová. Visitors can also book a guided walk around Hrusice.
