Over het museum
The Podorlický skanzen Krňovice has been developing since 2002 and was opened to the public in 2006. It lies on the edge of the Orlice Nature Park near Třebechovice pod Orebem and expands each year with new buildings and exhibitions. It is the only open-air museum of its kind in the Hradec Králové Region and focuses on the architectural and technical monuments of the Hradec Králové area, the foothills of the Orlické hory and the Podkrkonoší.
The site consists of folk architecture buildings relocated from the surrounding area, as well as rebuilt structures that have not survived. Mainly wood, opuka (marlstone) and brick were used. The interiors are furnished with period objects, and emphasis is placed on their functionality, so visitors can try out many of the exhibits. On display are demonstrations of period crafts, work tools and machines, for example a working žentour (horse-driven threshing machine) and stationary petrol and electric engines. The grounds also contain orchards of original fruit-tree varieties and fruit-drying kilns.
A striking landmark since 2021 has been a faithful replica of a Silesian windmill from Librantice, almost 11 metres high. The original mill was built in 1855 and disappeared only after the Second World War; in 1943 it was officially documented, so that an exact copy could be made from the surviving drawings. Since 2024 it has also been possible to stay overnight at the skanzen in a log-built gallery farmstead.
