Over het museum

The beginnings of museum activity in Žatec go back to the 1890s. In 1896 a German municipal museum was established; its collections were initially kept in the town hall and later in the former orphanage on Husova Street. In 1925 the teacher and local historian Karel Alois Polánek founded the Czech Minority Museum (České menšinové muzeum), which opened its exhibition in 1927. During the occupation the two collections were partly merged, and after the war, in 1947, the museum made them accessible to the public again.

From 1940 the museum has been housed in the building on Husova Street. Until 1960 it operated as a district museum and later as a municipal museum, and in 1991 it gained the status of a regional institution for the central Poohří area, i.e. the Žatec and Podbořany areas. Since 1 July 1973 it has been a contributory organisation of the town of Žatec and bears the name of Karel Alois Polánek.

Today the museum runs three visitor sites. The main building houses exhibitions on the prehistory of the central Poohří area, on the history and urban development of the town, on historical paintings of Žatec, a cabinet of hop labels, and the interactive Žatecký stroj času (Žatec Time Machine). A special exhibition presents the Žatecký poklad from the early 11th century. The Křížova vila is a neo-Renaissance middle-class house with preserved interiors and a small gallery of paintings from the museum’s collection. In the Stará papírna (Old Paper Mill), the former cardboard-box factory, you will find an exhibition on the extinct industrial enterprises of Žatec.

Vaste collectie

• Žatecký poklad – The exhibition presents the Žatecký poklad from the early 11th century in full for the first time; it was hidden during the reign of Prince Jaromír. Visitors can watch videos on jewellery-making and coin-striking using original methods, and view the treasury in groups of up to 12 people.
• Žatecký stroj času – Interactive exhibition with historical photographs of the town and a tablet game, in which visitors search for clues and add images to a replica of the 1843 map of Žatec.
• Historický a urbanistický vývoj města Žatce – The exhibition follows the history of Žatec from its first written mention in 1004, through the Hussite period and literary figures, to the tradition of hop growing.

Toegangsprijzen & kortingen

The admission stated applies to tours 1–3 (main building, Křížova vila, Stará papírna); the Žatecký poklad (tour 4) has its own admission. Children under 6, holders of ZTP/P, AMG and ICOM cards, and journalists enter free. Payment is only in cash, in Czech crowns. Foreign-language tours are available for an extra charge.

In the Žatecký poklad exhibition there is a children’s corner, where children can feel the weight of the treasure and make a denarius. In the Stará papírna, creative workshops for children are held from Tuesday to Thursday (nursery school CZK 15, primary school CZK 25, accompanying adult free). A family ticket is also available.

Publications and souvenirs are sold. Wi-Fi is provided by the museum only to tenants of its halls in the Křížova vila and the Stará papírna.

Halls for lectures, presentations, workshops and training: the large hall of the Křížova vila (50 people), the small hall of the Křížova vila (15 people) and the large hall of the Stará papírna (up to 60 people). Wedding ceremonies are also held in the Křížova vila.
