Over het museum
On the site of today's palace there were four medieval houses at Hradčany, destroyed by a fire in 1541. In one of them, in the 14th century, Master Theodoric, court painter to Charles IV, had a workshop. Jan IV Popel of Lobkowicz bought the plots and built a Renaissance residence in the North Italian style there, completed in 1567. The palace then changed owners several times and at the beginning of the 18th century passed by inheritance to the Schwarzenberg family.
It acquired its present form, with distinctive sgraffito decoration designed by Josef Schulz, in 1870–1874. In 1909 it was opened to the public as the seat of the Technical Museum; during the Second World War the Wehrmacht set up a military museum in it, and after its confiscation by the Czechoslovak state the Military History Museum was housed there.
The National Gallery Prague acquired the palace in 2002. Today it displays part of the Collection of Old Art: the exhibition Old Masters I presents a selection of masterpieces from the 16th to 18th centuries and traces European art from antiquity to the Enlightenment. It also includes part of the Baroque in Bohemia section, with more than forty works from the Czech lands. On the premises there is also the Myšák confectionery, with a terrace and a view of Prague.
