Over het museum
The origins of Rabí Castle are not precisely known. It seems that the lords of Rýzmberk founded it in the first half of the 14th century on a rocky spur above the River Otava, to guard the upper Otava region. At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries it was extended and strengthened, which proved farsighted during the Hussite Wars. Troops of Jan Žižka of Trocnov besieged and captured it in 1420 and again in 1421; a Hussite captain lost his right eye before the walls of Rabí.
The castle took on its late Gothic character under Půta Švihovský of Rýzmberk (c. 1450/1452–1504), an important nobleman at the court of Vladislaus Jagiellon, who had the seat rebuilt at great cost. After his death the family estate broke up and the castle often changed owners; it fell into disrepair and suffered during the Thirty Years' War. At the beginning of the 18th century it was acquired by the Prince-Bishop of Passau, Jan Filip z Lamberka, but the family preferred the more comfortable chateau at Žihobce. In the first half of the 18th century the castle burned down, losing its roofs and wooden parts, and for a long time it served as a source of building material.
The first attempts to save the castle were made as early as the mid-19th century. In the 20th century the Association for the Preservation of Monuments in the Upper Otava Region played a larger role, setting up a small museum and organising tours. The state took over administration of the castle in 1954; in 1978 it was declared a national cultural monument, and today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ).
