Over het museum

The site of today's chateau was once the Leptáč manor, which in 1569 Vilém of Rožmberk gave to Jakub Krčín of Jelčany, the steward of his estate and builder of ponds. Krčín built a new manor here and established a large game park. Vilém of Rožmberk grew fond of the site: in 1579 he acquired the manor in exchange for the market town of Sedlčany with ten villages, and in 1583 he commissioned the Italian builder Baldassare Maggi of Arogno to build a hunting chateau modelled on Italian villas. The whole complex was built in just six years, from 1583 to 1589.

Maggi designed a regular complex with an enclosing wall, an entrance tower, a garden, a water moat and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. He placed the villa at the front of the garden. The interiors were decorated by the painter Georg Widman and the stuccoist Antonio Melana. On the ground floor are hunting scenes; on the upper floor is the Golden Hall, with allegories of virtues and the coats of arms of Vilém of Rožmberk's four wives.

In 1602 Petr Vok sold the estate to Emperor Rudolf II, and in 1611 the chateau suffered during the Passau invasion. In 1762 to 1764 the Schwarzenbergs rebuilt it and gave it a mansard roof. In the 19th century it served officials, as an orphanage and as an archive. Since 1950 the chateau has been open to the public, and in 2006–2011 it underwent a major reconstruction. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) and is a national cultural monument.
