Public observatory on Petřín from 1928, with public observation, a permanent astronomical exhibition, a meteorite museum and film screenings of programmes.

Over het museum

The observatory on the edge of the Petřín Gardens came about at the initiative of the Czech Astronomical Society, founded in 1917, which wanted to set up a people’s observatory accessible to a wide circle of interested people. The ceremonial opening for members of the society took place on 24 June 1928, and it was opened to the public a year later. In 1930 the main and western domes were added.

In 1953 the observatory became an independent cultural and educational institution of the City of Prague. After extensive reconstruction it reopened in its present form in 1976, and in 1979 it was merged with the Planetárium Praha (Prague Planetarium) and the Hvězdárna Ďáblice (Ďáblice Observatory). The main dome, with the unique double Königův refraktor, one of the oldest telescopes still in working order in Czechoslovakia, was opened after restoration in 1989.

Public tours offer observation of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars through large telescopes, a permanent astronomical exhibition with interactive exhibits, historical instruments and a meteorite museum. Since 2018 the observatory and the planetarium have used the joint brand Planetum. In 2020 the reconstruction of the ground floor with the Astrobistro refreshments was completed, and in 2024 the Zeiss telescope named after Rudolf König was put back into operation.
