Over het museum

Efforts to establish a technical museum in Brno go back to the 19th century, when the city became an industrial centre with textile, engineering and electrical manufacturing. The predecessor of today's Moravian Museum already held technical collections, and in 1873 the Moravian Industrial Museum was founded, from which the Moravská galerie (Moravian Gallery) later developed. In the 20th century, graduates of technical schools and associations initiated concrete steps towards a separate technical museum.

The museum's direct predecessor was the Archive for the History of Industry, Commerce and Technical Work, founded in 1936 and revived in 1948. It obtained the building of the former St Ursula convent in Brno, and from 1951 it operated as a branch of the National Technical Museum in Prague. The Technical Museum in Brno became an independent institution on 1 January 1961. After restitution claims in the 1990s it had to leave the original convent building, and only a rescue programme in 1996–1997 saved it.

Today the museum is located in Králово Pole on Purkyňova Street. In the main building it offers 17 permanent exhibitions, such as Parní motory, Historická vozidla, Letecké motory, Optika, Výpočetní technika, Sdělovací technika, Ulička řemesel, Salon mechanické hudby and Kultura nevidomých, as well as the entertaining Technická herna with interactive demonstrations of physical laws. An art and technical workshop has operated since 2006, and a museum bistro was added in 2023.

The museum also manages several technical monuments outside the city, for example the Stará huť near Adamov, the Barokní kovárna v Těšanech or the Větrný mlýn in Kuželov, and it keeps extensive collections, a library and documentation on personalities of science and technology.
