Over het museum
Trmal Villa in Strašnice was built in 1902–1903 to a design by architect Jan Kotěra for František Trmal, director of a public commercial school. The house combines geometric Art Nouveau ornament, English country-house architecture and Slavic tradition. The Trmal family sold the villa in 1911; it was later owned by the Wálek family and by Marta Wálková. In 1945 it was nationalised, and from 1950 it belonged to the state.
In 1990 the villa passed to the Prague 10 district. It was restored in 1998–2001 and opened to the public on 1 April 1999. Today it serves as a small museum and as the Kotěra Centre of Architecture, run by the cultural agency FOIBOS.
The permanent exhibition Jan Kotěra – Teacher of Living presents the architect and living at the beginning of the 20th century. It shows furniture that Kotěra designed for important Prague families, which the Museum of Decorative Arts has lent, as well as Kotěra’s dining room and pictorial material. Short-term architectural and art exhibitions are also held in the villa.

The price of CZK 100 applies to the guided tour on Tuesday to Thursday at 16:00 (reduced CZK 50). Independent visit without a guide: admission is voluntary. Prices apply to payment in cash. The tour lasts about 45 minutes.
