Over het museum
The Veletržní palác (Trade Fair Palace) was built in 1925–1928 by the architects Josef Fuchs and Oldřich Tyl for the Prague Sample Fairs. At the time it was the largest building of its kind in the world, and to this day it is one of the most important examples of Czech functionalism. After the Second World War several foreign trade companies were based in it.
In August 1974 a major fire swept through the palace and nearly destroyed the building. Two years later a decision was made to rebuild it, which was only completed in the 1990s. Since 1976 the palace has been the seat of the National Gallery Prague.
Today the Veletržní palác houses permanent collection displays of modern and contemporary art, which trace developments from the end of the 18th century to the present. These include the displays 1796–1918: Art of a Long Century, 1918–1938: First Republic, 1956–1989: Architecture for All and 1939–2021: The End of the Black-and-White Era. The building also offers a café, a gallery shop and, in the Small Hall, the ATLAS creative space for children and families.
