Over het museum

The Dobruška museum began to take shape in the 1920s on the initiative of local associations, above all the Klub českých turistů (Club of Czech Tourists) and the Sokol. In 1925 a museum department was set up at the club, and two years later about two hundred collection items had been gathered. It was ceremonially opened on 19 July 1931 as the Vlastivědné museum pro Dobrušsko a Opočensko (Local History Museum for the Dobruška and Opočno Regions).

Since 1984 the museum has been housed in the former rabbi's house, no. 45, on Šubertovo náměstí. After the building was reconstructed, new exhibitions on the history of the town and of the Dobruška Jewish community were created here in 2013. The museum now also manages the birthplace house of F. L. Věk, the town hall tower, Rýdl's Villa, the František Kupka House, the Jewish cemetery and the garden lapidarium.

The collection holds around 11,000 items, mainly ethnographic, historical and artistic. They include early works by the painter František Kupka, the work of the chronicler and naïve painter Alois Beer, an archaeological collection, wooden sculptures, nativity scenes and craft tools. The museum is run by the town of Dobruška.
