Over het museum

Dobříš château became family property in 1630, when the Supreme Royal Huntsman Bruno Mansfeld bought it from Emperor Ferdinand II. At the end of the 17th century the Renaissance château was rebuilt into a baroque residence with an extensive garden. In 1720 a fire broke out here that almost destroyed the château; its present appearance is due to the reconstruction by Jindřich Pavel Mansfeld in 1745–1765.

In 1771 Mansfeld’s daughter Isabella married František Gundakar Colloredo, and the Colloredo-Mannsfeld family, which resided here until 1942, came into being. In that year the château was expropriated by the German Reich. After confiscation in 1945 it served as the Writers’ Home. In 1998 the château was returned to the family, and since then it has undergone extensive reconstruction, including the restoration of the fountain Napájení Heliových koní (Watering of Helios’ Horses) and a general repair of the baroque tower clock.

Today the château is operated by the company Colloredo-Mannsfeld spol. s r.o. The new exhibition on the first floor of the south wing combines period-furnished rooms with modern touch screens and projections, and traces the history of both families from 962, through the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the Industrial Revolution, up to restitution. The château includes a French garden, an English park and the orangery with themed exhibitions.
