Over het museum

A Gothic castle in Fryštát was built by the Piast dukes of Cieszyn; after a fire in 1511 it was replaced by a Renaissance castle. The Cieszyn princes used it as their seat. Around 1570 Prince Bedřich Kazimír moved to the Baroque castle in nearby Ráj, and after his death the Fryštát estate was auctioned. In 1572 Václav Cikán of Słupsk bought the castle. After a fire in 1617 and the Thirty Years' War it changed owners several times, until in 1650 the Gašin family took it over and made it the family seat again. In 1749 the estate was bought by the Irish nobleman Mikuláš Taaffe; his harsh rule contributed to the peasant uprising of 1766. After a fire in 1781 the lords moved permanently to Ráj.

In 1792 the Larisch-Mönnich family bought Fryštát and rebuilt it in the Empire style (completed in 1800); they laid out a park (1804), a family crypt and other buildings, and bred sheep; coal mines also belonged to the estate. After confiscation in 1945 the castle passed to the state; it was used by the OKD company and the local national committee, and its furnishings were scattered or lost.

The town of Karviná has owned the castle and park since 1990. The main building was restored in 1994–1997 and opened in autumn 1997; the neighbouring Lottyhaus opened in September 2003 and today houses an exhibition of the National Gallery in Prague on 19th-century Czech art and on mining. The surviving furnishings from Fryštát, Solce and Ráj form a permanent exhibition on noble living from the 16th to the 20th century.
