Over het museum

The first mention of the Kravaře fortified house dates from 1377; it belonged to a branch of the powerful Benešovic family, who called themselves lords of Kravaře, and whose coat of arms with a bent arrow still appears in the town's coat of arms. A land register of 1632 describes the estate for its new owner, the Polish alchemist at the court of Rudolf II, Michal Sendivoj ze Skorska. After his death his daughter Marie Veronika married Jakub of Eichendorff in 1636.

In the 1720s (1721–1728) Jan Rudolf Eichendorff financed a High Baroque rebuilding in the spirit of Hildebrandt and completed the decoration of the dome chapel. Because of debts the Eichendorffs sold the estate in 1782 and moved to Lubowice. The owners then changed frequently until 1920, when the state bought the castle and set up agricultural and housekeeping schools in it.

In the night of 21 January 1937 a fire destroyed the castle: the roof burned, as did the stucco and fresco ceilings, the wooden staircase and most of the interiors; only the chapel survived. Restoration began in the 1950s and ended in 1970 with a military-political exhibition on the Ostrava Operation. In 1990 the town of Kravaře took over the building and the park; a cultural centre and a municipal museum were set up, and in 1997 a permanent Baroque and ethnographic exhibition was opened. Today the castle exhibition with the chapel is on view, supplemented by the exhibition Za dveřmi je pravěk (Behind the Door Is Prehistory) and the exhibition of historical prams Elegance na kolečkách (Elegance on Wheels).
