Over het museum
Today's Baroque castle was preceded by a medieval fortified house in the north-west corner of the complex. The Manětín estate was acquired in 1560 from the Švamberk family by the Hrobčický family of Hrobčice, who, unlike the earlier owners, also lived in Manětín. Shortly before 1600 they expanded the fortified house and rebuilt it as a castle; remains of the Renaissance painted decoration of the facades were found during the reconstruction in 1997.
After the Thirty Years' War and alterations under Karel Maxmilián Lažanský, the High Baroque form of the castle emerged. A great fire in the town on 22 September 1712 destroyed the centre of the little town, including the church, the school, more than half of the houses and the castle. Václav Josef Lažanský and his wife Marie Gabriela then began a radical rebuilding to a design by the architect Tomáš Hafenecker, which he led until his death in 1730. The result was a long, multi-storey L-shaped building with a farmyard and 33 window axes; the castle is connected by a covered corridor to the oratory of the Church of St John the Baptist, and the slope of the square was levelled into three terraces decorated with fountains and Baroque statues.
After 1945 the castle passed to the State Farms and Forests. In 1959 a local history museum was set up in it, and in 1988 the district museum took over the building and began its restoration. Since 2002 the castle with its park has been a national cultural monument and is managed by the National Heritage Institute.
