Over het museum
The story of the Náchod castle and chateau began in the middle of the 13th century. The castle was owned by Bohemian kings and prominent nobles, and the Smiřický family of Smiřice brought the Renaissance to Náchod. The Italian Piccolomini family gave the complex its Baroque form and built the most important defensive elements of the castle fortress.
The late 18th century is linked to Duke Peter Biron of Courland and Zagań, who began the greatest cultural era in Náchod's history. Under the princely Schaumburg-Lippe family the complex hardly changed, and in the second half of the 19th century the private interiors of the second floor were created, which visitors see today in the Private Apartments circuit.
After 1945 the National Cultural Commission classified the castle as a first-category monument and opened it to the public. From 1950 the Náchod Museum was also housed in the castle, which left the complex in the 1990s. Today the castle is managed by the National Heritage Institute and offers several tour circuits, an exhibition on the development of the castle in the cellar, and a defensive tower with a view.
