Over het museum

At the beginning of the 18th century Anna Marie Františka of Tuscany, widow of the Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg, had the chateau built as a summer residence. The building in Ploskovice, on the site of an older chateau, was meant to keep pace with the residences of foreign nobility. Its builder was probably Václav Špaček, and the decoration was carried out by leading Prague artists. Artificial water grottoes, known as grottoes, were created below the chateau.

In 1805 the estate passed to the Tuscan branch of the Habsburgs. From 1849 the chateau served as the summer residence of former Emperor Ferdinand V, the last crowned Czech king. The chateau was therefore rebuilt and raised by one storey. The work until 1854 was led by the Prague builder Jan Bělský, and the painter Josef Navrátil, the sculptor Václav Levý and other craftsmen worked on the interiors. Late Rococo halls with ceiling paintings were created, which still form the core of the tour today.

After 1918 the chateau served as a summer residence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the Second World War it housed the NAPOLA Nazi school. From 1952 the chateau and park have been protected as state monuments and open to the public. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Visitors can walk through the 11 rooms of the basic route, the grottoes and the eight-hectare park with its fountains and pond.
