Over het museum
Slatiňany is first mentioned in 1371 as a medieval fortified house of Zbyněk Otháj of Slatiňany. After 1580 Bohuslav Mazanec of Frymburk had the fortified house demolished and a Renaissance château built on its site; after the Battle of White Mountain it was confiscated, and during the Thirty Years' War it was plundered. In 1732 Count Josef Schönfeld bought the estate, and in 1746 his daughter married Jan Adam of Auersperg, which began the Auersperg ownership.
Under the Auerspergs the château was remodelled in the Baroque style; at the beginning of the 19th century it acquired a uniform Classicist character, and in the late 1850s it underwent a Neo-Gothic reconstruction. In 1894–1898 the princely stables and the miniature Kočičí hrádek (Cat's Castle) were built. After 1945 the family's property was confiscated, and the château passed to the state.
In 1947–1950 the Hippological Museum was established here, which had its own exhibition from 1950. The château has been a national cultural monument since 2001, and in 2011 the exhibition Letní sídlo Auerspergů (the Auerspergs' summer residence) opened. In 2017–2020 the château and park were revitalised. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute; the tour Království za koně – Hipologické muzeum is closed because the exhibition is being modernised.
