Over het museum

Bakewell Old House is the oldest surviving residence in the Derbyshire town of Bakewell and dates from 1534, in the reign of Henry VIII. It began as a cottage for the steward of Ralph Gell of Hopton, who collected tithes on his behalf. In the time of Elizabeth I it was enlarged into a gentleman's house with a large central fireplace and an indoor toilet known as a garderobe.

In 1777 the industrialist Richard Arkwright, divided the house into five cottages to house his mill workers. These later slipped into decay and by the 1950s they had been condemned, and the building was due to be demolished. It was saved by the Bakewell and District Historical Society, which restored it and turned it into a museum.

Today the museum is run by the society and fills a series of rooms with local objects given by residents over some sixty years. The collections include Tudor items found inside the walls, ceramics, textiles, costumes, toys and cameras, and a collection of historic doll's houses. The museum also offers town tours, school sessions and children's trails, and it is open from spring to early autumn each year.
