Over het museum
The Bala Lake Railway runs on part of the trackbed of the former Great Western Railway line from Ruabon to Barmouth. The section between Bala and Dolgellau opened in 1868, and passenger services through Bala ended in January 1965, when the line was closed following the Beeching report.
The narrow-gauge heritage railway opened on 13 August 1972. It was started by a local company, Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Ltd, which was reportedly the first company in Wales to be registered entirely in the Welsh language. The line is about 4½ miles long and runs from Llanuwchllyn to the edge of the town of Bala along the shore of Llyn Tegid.
Most of its steam locomotives are Hunslet engines built for the Dinorwic and Penrhyn slate quarries, which gives the railway a notable collection of quarry locomotives. The original station buildings and signal box at Llanuwchllyn have been kept, and the Heritage Centre there, which shows items from the slate industry of north Wales, won an award from the Heritage Railway Association in 2020.
The railway’s trust is raising money for the Red Dragon Project, which would extend the line into Bala town.
