Tijdelijk gesloten (naar verwachting tot 2027-02). The museum has been closed to the public since 20 April 2025 for collection care, a refreshed visitor experience and building upgrades. Occasional special event days are held during the closure; the official reopening is planned for February 2027.

Over het museum

The Booth Museum was founded in 1874 by Edward Thomas Booth, a naturalist and collector with a special passion for birds. He built the museum in the grounds of his home on Dyke Road in Brighton and filled it with British birds, which he displayed in natural-looking habitat scenes known as dioramas. More than 300 of these cases formed the core of the collection that passed into the ownership of the town and was opened to the public in 1891, on the condition that the dioramas were not altered.

In 1971 the museum became a museum of natural history in the wider sense. Over the decades the collection has grown to include around 525,000 insects, 50,000 minerals and rocks, 30,000 plants and 5,000 microscope slides, along with fossils, skeletons and old specimens such as shells from a Mediterranean lagoon around 55 million years old and dinosaur bones.

The museum is known for its quirky Victorian character, with taxidermy, skeletons and fossils, while also dealing with modern questions of conservation and protecting the natural world. It is part of Brighton & Hove Museums, run by the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust.

Since 20 April 2025 the museum has been closed to visitors so that the collections can be improved and cared for, visitor facilities refreshed and the building services upgraded. A larger redevelopment than first planned, supported by a national improvement fund, has moved the official reopening to February 2027.
