Over het museum
Brodsworth was bought in 1791 by the London merchant and banker Peter Thellusson. His great-grandson Charles Sabine Thellusson commissioned the architect Philip Wilkinson to replace the older Georgian house with a new Italianate mansion, built between 1861 and 1863 and furnished with luxurious fittings by the firm Lapworths. By the end of the 1860s the formal gardens, woodland, farm buildings and estate cottages were in place.
Later generations of the family found the house expensive to maintain, though a colliery lease was granted in 1905 and electricity was installed in 1913. In 1931 the estate passed to Charles Grant-Dalton, and his widow Sylvia lived in the hall until her death in 1988. Her daughter did not wish to take on the property, and in 1990 the house and gardens were given to English Heritage, with the National Heritage Memorial Fund buying most of the contents.
After major repairs the hall opened to the public in 1995. Instead of restoring it to a single date, English Heritage conserved the interiors largely as they were found, so that both the original Victorian decoration and the marks left by later family life remain visible. The servants' wing shows how the household worked, and the gardens have been returned to their formal 19th-century appearance.

All of the ground floor is level, and a small Victorian lift serves the first-floor family rooms; it takes only one wheelchair at a time, and the servants' bedrooms are reached by steps. Stone stairs connect floors in the servants' wing and main hall, and some treads are worn and smooth. Ramps lead into the shop and tearooms. The terrace and formal gardens have tarmac paths, while the Quarry Garden has gravel paths. Accessible toilets are available, but there is no adult changing facility. Wheelchairs can be borrowed, and small light mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs can enter the hall, while large heavy scooters cannot. Manual wheelchair users are advised to bring an assistant. A golf buggy runs from the visitor centre, next to the main car park, and six disabled bays are directly outside the visitor centre. Assistance dogs are welcome. Seating is available around the hall and grounds. Visitors with access needs are asked to contact the site before they come.

The Garden Tearooms in the servants' wing serve Yorkshire food, with a children's menu, high chairs and bottle warming, and there is outdoor seating on the Tea Terrace. The shop sells gifts, books, garden items and seasonal plants, and a second-hand bookshop is in the hall near the tearooms. Visitors may bring a picnic to eat in the gardens. Toilets are in a separate block about 50 metres from the hall.
