Over het museum
Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey, opened in 1907 as the world's first purpose-built motor racing circuit and later became one of Britain's major aircraft manufacturing sites. The track was used for racing between 1907 and 1939, and aircraft production by Vickers and its successors continued until the British Aerospace factory closed in 1988.
The first events to mark the site's history took place in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1987 the Brooklands Museum Trust was launched, and restoration began on features such as Test Hill and the Members' Bridge. Prince Michael of Kent became Royal Patron in 1989, and the museum opened to the public in 1991. The 1933 Napier-Railton record-breaking car was acquired in 1997.
A major addition was Concorde G-BBDG, which arrived in 2003 and was opened to visitors in 2006 after restoration. The Trust received the freehold of the site in 2010, and the London Bus Museum, run by an independent trust, opened on the site in 2011. A flood in 2000 had earlier forced a temporary closure and a refurbishment of the Clubhouse.
A Heritage Lottery-funded project started in 2016 to build a new flight shed and archive store, move the Bellman Hangar and re-display it as the Brooklands Aircraft Factory, and restore the Finishing Straight of the track. Today the museum is an independent charity on a protected scheduled monument. It is also an education centre, welcoming more than 13,000 school pupils each year.
