Over het museum
Buckinghamshire Railway Centre is run by the Quainton Railway Society at the former Quainton Road station, about five miles west of Aylesbury. The story began in 1962 with the London Railway Preservation Society, which collected former London Underground vehicles and railway memorabilia that were kept at several government depots. The Quainton Railway Society was formed in 1969 to run a working museum at the station, and in 1971 it took over the collection of the earlier society.
The society restored the main station building to its 1900 appearance and developed the 25-acre site on both sides of a working main line, which is joined by two footbridges. Buildings dating from 1874 to the 1960s house around 170 locomotives and items of rolling stock, a members' reference library and a small exhibit on the history of the Brill Tramway.
The glass-roofed Visitor Centre at the heart of the site is the former Oxford Rewley Road station, which was dismantled and re-erected at Quainton in 2002. The centre runs steaming days with rides behind steam locomotives, a miniature railway, steam galas, vehicle rallies and family events such as Day Out with Thomas.
