Over het museum
Bywell Hall stands on the banks of the River Tyne in Northumberland. The manor of Bywell belonged to the Neville family in the fourteenth century, and after their estates were forfeited the Crown sold it to the Fenwick family in 1571. William Fenwick built the present house in 1760 to designs by the architect James Paine, in the Palladian style.
The Beaumont family bought the estate in the early nineteenth century and have owned it ever since. The architect John Dobson altered the house in 1817 and worked on further improvements for the family in 1827, and extensions were added in the 1890s. The Beaumonts later became the Viscounts Allendale. The hall is a Grade II* listed building and remains a family home, set in parkland beside the river.
The house holds the family's collection of old master paintings, ceramics, silver, rare furniture and antiquities, and over the years it has welcomed politicians, including prime ministers, as guests. It is not open every day. Visitors can see the state rooms on a guided tour of roughly an hour, held on selected dates through the year, which also explains the history and social life of the Beaumont family. Tours must be arranged with the estate, and each visitor has to show photographic identification on arrival.
