Over het museum
Castle Rushen stands beside the harbour in Castletown, the former capital of the Isle of Man, and the town grew up around it. Tradition places the first stone keep in the 10th century, and later rulers extended the fortress between the 13th and 16th centuries with towers, gatehouses and a curtain wall. Magnús Óláfsson, the last Norse King of Mann, died here in 1265, and Robert the Bruce took the castle after a short siege in 1313.
From 1405 the Stanley family ruled the island from the castle, and Countess Charlotte Stanley held it for the Royalists in the English Civil War until she surrendered in 1651. In later centuries the buildings served as a mint, a law court, the seat of the early Manx parliament, a prison and for a time as an asylum. The castle clock, a gift from Queen Elizabeth I in 1597, still keeps time above the town.
Manx National Heritage took over the castle in 1988. After a long restoration it opened to visitors in July 1991. Today a one-way route leads from the courtyard up a spiral stair to the ramparts and down again through rooms furnished in medieval and later styles, including the banqueting hall, the presence chamber, a Victorian prison cell and the treasury. A ground-floor exhibition room and a short film explain the history of the site.

Young children are welcome and there is a children’s interactive gallery by the entrance. The spiral stairs, ramparts and high wall walks need close supervision, and the sounds and life-sized figures can feel scary to small children; torches can be borrowed. Buggies can be left in the entrance area. Baby changing is in the toilet blocks about 100 metres from the entrance. Food and drink are not allowed inside the keep, but picnics are encouraged in the grounds.
