Over het museum

Ceredigion Museum was set up in 1972 by the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society. The society handed it over to the newly formed Ceredigion District Council in 1974, and it passed to Ceredigion County Council in 1996.

It is housed in the Coliseum on Terrace Road, a restored Edwardian theatre in the centre of Aberystwyth close to the seafront. The building is Grade II listed. The theatre interior forms the setting for displays on the heritage, culture and art of the county of Ceredigion.

The collection includes Welsh furniture and costume, objects from farming and rural life, taxidermy made by the Hutchings family between the 1870s and 1942, and paintings by Alfred Worthington. The museum has also shown smaller displays at other places in the county, such as Lampeter Library, the Kite Centre in Tregaron and the harbourmaster’s office in New Quay.

The museum is currently closed to visitors while essential repair and maintenance work is carried out on the historic building, including a new roof, repairs to the suspended ceiling and replastering of damaged walls. The café, the shop and the Tourist Information Centre in the same building stay open. A 3D tour and an app allow a virtual visit in the meantime.
