Over het museum
Charlecote has belonged to the Lucy family since the 13th century. Sir Thomas Lucy built the present house in the 1550s, and tradition says that Queen Elizabeth I stayed there. A well-known local story claims that the young William Shakespeare was caught poaching deer in the park.
In the 1820s George Hammond Lucy and his wife Mary Elizabeth rebuilt much of the house in a Tudor revival style, filling it with furniture, paintings and objects that reflect Victorian taste. The grounds were reshaped in the 18th century by Capability Brown, and the park, with its fallow deer and Jacob sheep, still surrounds the house.
The Fairfax-Lucy family gave the property to the National Trust in 1946. Visitors today see the family rooms, the Victorian kitchen and the outbuildings, which include a laundry and a brewhouse, and walk through the garden and the deer park.
