Over het museum
Charles Wesley, often called the greatest Methodist hymn writer, worked in Bristol between 1739 and 1787. His family first lived at 19 Charles Street from 1749 to 1771, but that house no longer exists. In 1766 he moved to number 4, a house built in 1742, and he continued to use it on his visits to Bristol until at least 1782.
Six rooms of the house have been restored to show how they might have looked in his time: the parlour, the music room, the study, the kitchen and two bedrooms. The displays tell the story of Charles, his wife Sally and their gifted children, one of whom was celebrated as a child prodigy in music.
The house is a listed building with five floors linked by a steep, winding staircase. It is looked after by John Wesley's New Room, about 100 yards away, and can be visited by pre-booked groups of ten or more with a guided tour.
