Over het museum

The museum began in 1977 as an aviation enthusiasts' group among the staff of the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company. It was soon opened to people outside the company and first ran from a temporary site on a runway at Norwich Airport. By 1985 it had moved to its present site next to the airport at Horsham St Faith, where it has stayed since.

The museum won accreditation in 1996 and is run as a registered charity by volunteers. Its best-known exhibits arrived by air: the Avro Vulcan XM612 landed at the airport on retirement from service in 1983, and the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR.2 XV255 followed in 2010. Fenland Hall, a new exhibition hall, opened to visitors in 2024.

The collection ranges from small propeller aircraft to bombers and airliners, with cockpit sections, a display of aero engines and an archive of more than 25,000 items about Norfolk's air bases, people and aircraft. The museum is also the official museum of 100 Group, the RAF's wartime radio countermeasures group, and has indoor displays on local aviation firms, RAF Horsham St Faith, Norwich Airport and the American 8th Air Force in the Second World War.

The museum says all areas are accessible to visitors with disabilities, but the car park surface is gravel and the aircraft compound is grass. Accessible parking spaces are next to the main entrance, and cars can stop at the entrance to drop off passengers. There is no ramp or wheelchair access into any of the aircraft; the Nimrod and RJ85 are reached by passenger steps and the Vulcan by two ladders. Only assistance dogs are allowed inside.

Goed om te wetenThe museum recommends at least 2 hours, or 2.5 hours with a visit inside an aircraft. Visits are usually self-guided, with volunteers on hand to explain the exhibits. Groups can ask for supervised visits inside the large aircraft in small groups (up to 6 in the Nimrod and RJ85, up to 4 in the Vulcan). The Vulcan has a minimum height of 1.2 metres and needs suitable footwear. Car and motorcycle clubs may be allowed to park vehicles among the aircraft by arrangement. The archive can be used by prior arrangement with at least 14 days' notice.
