Over het museum
Dan Winter's House is an early 18th-century listed farmhouse on a working farm near Loughgall in County Armagh. The Winter family has lived there since 1665. The house was re-thatched and restored in 2000, and it is open to visitors as a small museum of the family and the local area.
The house is closely linked to the Battle of the Diamond, fought nearby on 21 September 1795. According to the house's own account, the decision to form the Orange Order was taken in the sitting room after the battle. Visitors can see relics from the battle together with old farming and dairy tools. The timber of the house has been dated, and it is believed to be one of the last houses built with Irish oak.
In the old sitting room, with its turf fire, a member of the family may talk about how the Winters lived. The historic farmyard has vintage farm machinery, and there are traditional tearooms. The battlefield and its monument, close to the Diamond crossroads, can be visited daily.
