Over het museum
Deene Park is a country house in Northamptonshire that has been the home of the Brudenell family for more than 500 years. Sir Robert Brudenell took the lease in 1514, and the family later became the Earls of Cardigan. The house grew over about six centuries, from a Tudor core with a Great Hall enlarged in the 1570s to a Georgian wing for entertaining added in the late eighteenth century.
The house is closely linked with the Crimean War. The 7th Earl of Cardigan led the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854, and his widow Adeline, Countess of Cardigan, inherited Deene in 1864. Uniforms, memorabilia and the story of the horse that rode at Balaklava are part of the visit. Troops were billeted at the house in the Second World War, and in 1943 a crashing American bomber damaged the stained glass in the Great Hall.
Today Deene is still a family home, now of Robert and Charlotte Brudenell, who live there with their son. Visitors see main rooms that are in everyday use, including the Great Hall, Tapestry Room, Bow Room and Drawing Room, with family portraits, furniture, porcelain and books. Volunteer guides look after the rooms on open days. The formal gardens, with a parterre, rose garden, white garden and long borders, lead out to parkland and lakes linked by a canal.
