Over het museum

Dumfries House was designed by the Adam brothers and built in the 1750s for the 5th Earl of Dumfries. The Earl furnished it in the rococo style in the 1760s and ordered a large group of pieces from the workshop of Thomas Chippendale. Much of the original furniture stayed in the house for more than two centuries, which makes it one of the best preserved Georgian interiors in Scotland. In the 19th century the estate passed to the Marquesses of Bute, who added wings to the east and west.

The last resident, the Dowager Marchioness of Bute, died in 1993, and the house was no longer used as a main residence. When the house and its contents were offered for sale in 2007, a group led by the then Prince of Wales bought them and saved the collection for Scotland. A conservation programme in 2010 and 2011 restored the interiors, furniture, tapestries and a pink Murano glass chandelier from the 1760s that had been found in a lower room.

The house is now run by The King's Foundation, a charity, and is surrounded by a large estate with gardens, an arboretum, a walled garden, mazes, playgrounds, a working farm and training and education centres. Visitors see the principal rooms and, on longer tours, further floors with the art, clock and Chippendale collections. The proceeds from tours and shop sales support the charity's educational work.
