Over het museum
The Nightingale Training School was set up at St Thomas' Hospital in 1860 with Florence Nightingale's help, and its first group of 15 trainee nurses began a model of nurse education that later spread around the world. The matron Dame Alicia Lloyd Still began collecting objects that had belonged to Nightingale or that she had given to nurses trained at the school. This group of objects, known as the Nightingalia, was used to teach the trainees and was shown at anniversaries and special events.
The collection passed to the newly created Florence Nightingale Museum Trust in 1983, and the museum opened in 1989 on the site of the training school, in the grounds of St Thomas' Hospital opposite the Houses of Parliament. It is run as an independent charity.
The galleries follow Nightingale's comfortable childhood, her struggle with her family's wishes to become a nurse, her work during the Crimean War, and her later campaigns for better healthcare and for the use of statistics in public health. Objects include the lamp that gave her the nickname the Lady with the Lamp, her medicine chest and her pet owl Athena. The museum also tells the stories of Mary Seacole and Alexis Soyer, who worked in the same war.
