Over het museum

The Freud Museum is the house at 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead where Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, spent the last year of his life. The Freud family came to England as refugees after the German annexation of Austria in March 1938, and they were able to bring all their belongings with them from Vienna. The heart of the house is Freud's study, which still holds his famous psychoanalytic couch, his desk and a large part of his collection of antiquities.

Freud died in his study in 1939. His daughter Anna Freud, a pioneer of child psychoanalysis, continued to live and work in the house until her death in 1982. She left the house to become a museum, and it opened to the public in 1986.

The museum cares for about 2,500 antiquities from Freud's personal collection, together with archives and libraries. It shows the Freud family tree, Anna Freud's room and a film about the family, and it has displayed contemporary art for more than 25 years, with artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Sophie Calle and Mark Wallinger responding to the house and its history. The museum also runs events, conferences and learning visits for schools and community groups.
