Over het museum

The Golden Hinde in Southwark is a full-size reconstruction of the galleon in which Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world between 1577 and 1580, the first English ship to complete a circumnavigation. The original vessel was eventually lost to rot and neglect.

The replica was inspired by the 400th anniversary of the voyage, when two Californian businessmen formed a company to build a new ship. Naval architect Loring Christian Norgaard spent three years studying manuscripts and evidence on sixteenth-century ships to design it, as no detailed plans of Drake's ship survived. It was built with traditional methods and materials, including English oak, elm and pine, at the Hinks shipyard in Appledore, Devon, where the keel was laid in 1971.

Since 1996 the ship has been moored in St Mary Overie Dock at Bankside, where it is run as a museum covering two histories 400 years apart: Drake's circumnavigation and the voyages of the reconstruction in the twentieth century. Visitors explore the decks and cabins on their own or with crew members, and the ship also hosts school programmes, living history days, events and private hire.
