Over het museum
The Gordon Highlanders were raised in 1794 by Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon, and served for two centuries before merging with the Queen's Own Highlanders in 1994. The museum was set up to keep the regiment's story and collection together in Aberdeen, and it opened to the public in 1997.
It occupies St Luke's, a house on Viewfield Road dating from around 1800 that was later extended. The building was the home and studio of the Aberdeen painter Sir George Reid, and portraits and still lifes by him are still shown in the rooms where he worked. Memorial gardens, redesigned in 1997, surround the house and honour members of the regiment.
The galleries follow the regiment from the Napoleonic Wars through the Victorian campaigns, both World Wars and the Cold War, using uniforms, colours, weapons, film and interactive maps. The collection includes eleven original Victoria Crosses, an armoury of edged weapons, firearms and medals, regimental silver, and a dining room arranged as an officers' mess. A full-size replica of a First World War trench, installed in 2019, stands in the grounds.
The museum is a Scottish charity and is largely run by volunteers, who also lead many of the guided visits.
