Over het museum

The Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy was established in 1828 by Robert Edmond Grant, the first Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy in England, as a teaching collection for the newly founded University of London, later University College London. Grant was known for his work on marine invertebrates, especially sponges, and his evolutionary ideas influenced the young Charles Darwin.

Grant began assembling specimens, dissection material and diagrams when he arrived in London, and on his death in 1874 he left his library and some 11,000 specimens to the college. His successors as professor also looked after the collection and included zoologists such as Edwin Ray Lankester. Over time it absorbed specimens from other university collections, from London Zoo and from hospital comparative anatomy collections, as well as material from the Challenger and Discovery expeditions and from scientists such as Thomas Henry Huxley.

The collection has been in continuous use by students since 1828 and has moved between several UCL buildings. It opened to the public as a museum in 1996. Today it holds around 100,000 specimens covering the whole animal kingdom and is housed in the Rockefeller Building on University Street.
