Over het museum

Great Dixter in Northiam is a house and garden in the Sussex Weald. The house is really three buildings combined: a hall house built here in the mid-15th century, a yeoman's house from Benenden in Kent that dates from the early 16th century and was moved to the site in 1910, and a third part that joined the two together with extra rooms, completed in 1912. At that time the house, previously called simply Dixter, was renamed Great Dixter to distinguish it from Little Dixter next door.

The architect Edwin Lutyens designed the left-hand part of the house, with service quarters below and bedrooms above, and its sweeping tiled roof and tall chimneys. The medieval parts, the Great Hall, Parlour and Solar, are open to visitors, with a guide in each room.

The house was the home of Christopher Lloyd, who became one of Britain's best-known garden writers and developed the exuberant, intensively planted flower garden for which Great Dixter is known. The Great Dixter Charitable Trust, which he formed in 2004, now runs the house and garden as a visitor attraction, trains gardeners through placements and courses, and operates a nursery, shop and café.

The garden has level access from the car park over grass and track, but paths are narrow, partly gravel or earth, with slopes, some ramps and steps in places, so many areas are not easily reached by wheelchair or pushchair; in late summer planting makes some paths narrower still. On the ground floor of the house the Great Hall and Parlour are accessible, but the Solar is reached by steep stairs. Adapted toilets are near the ticket office and near the shop. Disabled parking is in the small car park opposite the ticket office, and passengers can be set down at the ticket office. Two wheelchairs can be borrowed if booked in advance, and route maps for wheelchair users are available at the ticket office. Only guide dogs are allowed in the house and garden.

Garden Explorers sessions and school-holiday activities for children are published on the What's On pages; parents and carers must supervise their children.
