Over het museum
There has been a house at Greenway for more than 400 years. In the sixteenth century the Gilbert family, soldiers and seafarers who took part in early colonial ventures, built a Tudor mansion here. The present Georgian house dates from the late eighteenth century and was built for a prosperous sea merchant. The estate changed hands many times in the following centuries and gained wings, a boathouse and gardens that run down the wooded hillside to the River Dart.
In 1938 the crime writer Agatha Christie and her husband, the archaeologist Max Mallowan, bought the estate. The family used it for summers and Christmases, and in the 1950s it was a lively place for friends and relatives. During the Second World War the house was requisitioned, and the American coastguard used it in the preparations for D-Day; a frieze painted in the library in 1944 dates from that time. The boathouse appears as a murder scene in Christie's novel Dead Man's Folly.
Christie's daughter Rosalind Hicks and her husband lived at Greenway until 2004. The National Trust acquired the estate in 2000, and the house is now presented as the family's holiday home of the 1950s. It holds the family's collections of ceramics, Tunbridgeware, silver and books, including first editions of Christie's novels, as well as archaeological finds from the Middle East brought back from Mallowan's excavations.
